Grants Now Available to Grow Tourism in McKinney

Posted on January 31, 2018 at 12:45 PM by Beth Shumate

The McKinney Convention & Visitors Bureau is now offering grants to assist in funding initiatives, activities or events that promote the City of McKinney as a tourism destination.

The deadline for the second round of grant applications is Friday, Feb. 2, with presentations occurring Tuesday, Feb. 27 at the MCVB board meeting. A committee of board members will review the applications and make recommendations that will be voted on during their March 2018 board meeting.

“Funding of the MCVB comes from hotel taxes collected by the city, and we’re excited to be able to offer some of those funds back to our tourism partners who want to bring new tourism dollars into the city economy,” said Dee-dee Guerra, Executive Director.

The MCVB board budgeted $20,000 to award this fiscal year which runs October 2017 through September 2018. The first round of grants were awarded in January 2018. The grant recipients will use their awarded finds for marketing and promotion of the following events or projects:

  • Collin County History Museum: $1,600 for its Padcaster Studio project for use in marketing and promoting upcoming museum Then & Now exhibit in 2019.
  • Kiwanis McKinney: $1,000 for promotional t-shirts for their annual McKinney Kiwanis Triathlon.
  • Heard-Craig Center for the Arts: $5,900 for advertising of their 2019 Art Meets Floral Regional Design Competition.

The committee also recommended an award of $1,500 to the Heritage Guild of Collin County for expansion and advertising of their next Murder Mystery Dinner at Chestnut Square Historic Village. Due to projected changes in the scope of the event this year, Chestnut Square pulled their application. These funds will roll back in to available grant funds, now totally $11,500, that will be available to applicants in March 2018.

“Hotel tax has very specific guidelines in the State of Texas, so potential applicants for grant funds will need to check their request against the Texas Hotel Tax Expenditure Requirements,” Guerra said. “That document is available on our website along with the grant guidelines, inquiry letter and application.”

Complete information about application, presentation and award dates is listed on the application which is downloadable from or by contacting Guerra at Also, anyone wishing to get more information about the grants prior to applying are encouraged to contact Guerra by either email or by calling 972-547-2059.
