Ms. Shumate holds a bachelor’s degree in Mass Media Communications with specialization in Print Journalism and a minor in English from Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas (1985). After graduation, Beth worked as a reporter/photographer for two Arkansas newspapers before relocating to Texas in 1987 where she worked in the art department of TravelHost Magazine’s printing facility in Dallas. In 1989, she joined the staff of The Software Group (now Tyler Technologies), a Plano-based software development company for county government and law enforcement, as a documentation writer and training coordinator.
After moving to McKinney in 1994, Beth worked as a contract writing/desktop publishing consultant before joining News America Marketing as an area manager. She returned to her journalism roots mid-2006 as a reporter for McKinneyNews.net (which later became TownSquareBuzz.com) before joining the MCVB staff.
Ms. Shumate became a Certified Tourism Ambassador (CTA) in 2009. She completed her Texas Destination Marketer (TDM) certification through Texas Association of Convention & Visitors Bureaus in 2017. Also in 2017, she earned a certification in Brand Management and Digital Marketing from Collin College.
In addition to her work at the MCVB, Ms. Shumate is a member of the McKinney Community Band (playing French horn) and serves as the band's Marketing Committee chair.
