By early afternoon the sidewalks around McKinney can feel hot enough to fry an egg. The good news? You don't have to let the heat cut your visit short — here's your guide to staying cool and still having a great time.
Laughs, games, and one secret password
Right next door, Arcade 92 brings back every retro game you loved — Pac-Man, pinball, Crazy Taxi — all set to free play for one admission, plus a modern eSports lounge and a full bar and kitchen. And Expressive Aromas runs workshops where scent experts guide you through building a custom fragrance from over 100 single notes.
Pickleball without the sunburn
Two spots keep the game indoors: The Picklr has nine climate-controlled courts, open play, and day passes for non-members, while The Courts of McKinney, inside Gabe Nesbitt Community Park, pairs indoor pickleball with indoor tennis and a clubhouse.
Make something with your hands
Downtown's creative studios each have a personality: Walls of Clay is the original paint-your-own-pottery spot, open since 2001, with glass fusing and candle pouring for the non-painters; Glaze Ceramic Studio leans into serious ceramic arts with classes and memberships; and Painting with a Twist runs guided painting sessions with a glass of wine in hand. The Empress House, a boutique mahjong studio and social club, teaches total beginners the tiles in one Mahjong 101 sitting.
Area RC, founded by YouTube creator Mark Santa Maria, is a working RC car shop with an indoor track in north McKinney — watch races on the mini track and rock-crawling course, or join a beginner racing academy. Escape rooms round out the roster: Escapology and North Texas Escape Rooms both offer private, themed rooms for groups of two to eight.
For the littlest travelers
CheerLand is a bright indoor playground with slides and climbing structures for toddlers through pre-teens; Play Street Museum – McKinney offers pretend-play exhibits for younger kids. And the newest indoor attraction is Dave & Buster's — the largest location in North Texas at roughly 40,000 square feet. If the group still wants water, the city's free splash pads (Finch Park, Prestwyck Park, Dr. Mack Hill Park, EA Randles Park) run a quick cooldown before dinner.
Insider tip from Visit McKinneyA sample day: pottery at Walls of Clay or mahjong at The Empress House in the morning, lunch on the square, pickleball or an escape room in the afternoon, then The Comedy Arena and a nightcap round of pinball at Arcade 92.
