This 289-acre nature preserve made up of a variety of habitats and miles of nature trails also features bird blinds, an Animals of the World Exhibit, an educational pioneer village, butterfly gardens, and a variety of indoor exhibits. Bring a picnic basket for enjoying lunch in the picnic area. Most trails are stroller-friendly. Check their website for a variety of classes, special events, and visiting exhibits. 

Dinosaurs Live!

Encounter the 46-foot T-Rex and nine new life-size animatronic dinosaurs along the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary’s nature trails during the annual Dinosaurs Live exhibit that visits the Heard every fall into winter.  Let your imagination run wild as you walk back in time along one of our nature trails! This life-size Animatronic Dinosaurs exhibit always gives families and friends a fun, educational activity to enjoy together. See the dinosaurs move and hear them roar! Photo op and play area dinosaurs will be available as well. This year, the exhibit also features an outdoor fossil dig. (Photo courtesy of @terracwagner.)

Native Texas Butterfly House & Garden

Commune with butterflies in their natural setting as they fly around you inside their Native Texas Butterfly House & Garden. The butterfly house includes native species and host plants that naturally attract these lovely, colorful winged creatures.Take notes as you may get some ideas for building your own pollinator habitat at home. This butterfly house and garden provide the perfect setting for nature photography and portraiture (small fee applies). Please note that the butterfly house is not open during the off-season. The butterfly garden is accessible year-round; however, plant life and inhabitants vary seasonally.
