Museums & History in McKinney, TX

Historic Downtown McKinney is brimming with rich history and culture in the form of unique museums, a lively square, and historic buildings. Dive deep into local roots at the Collin County History Museum. Housed in the 1911 Federal Building, which served as the post office for McKinney for decades, it features immersive exhibits showcasing maps, photographs, archival newspapers, and other artifacts that together tell the story of Collin County’s origins.  

A short walk away, Chestnut Square Heritage Village contains six historic homes and buildings, including the oldest house in the city, the 1854 Faires House. The grounds also include a general store, a wedding chapel, a blacksmith shop, and a replica of a one-room schoolhouse. The Heard-Craig Center for the Arts organization is based in the beautifully and lovingly maintained Heard-Craig House (built in 1900). This pristinely-restored home holds many works of Texas art and artifacts that belonged to the Heard-Craig families that reflect on the lives of this influential early McKinney family. The grounds also include Katie's Garden and a carriage house that also serve as a popular wedding venue. Make sure when visiting to ask the staff about the Art-o-Mat, a refurbished vintage cigarette machine that dispenses miniature works of original art in small boxes! 

Younger and older children alike will love visiting the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary. This 289-acre nature preserve features an Animal Encounters Trail, native plant displays, butterfly gardens, and rotating animatronic exhibits, including dinosaurs and bugs. With miles of nature trails through multiple habitats, peaceful ponds, and lush trees, this natural sanctuary feels worlds away from city life.
