McKinney Must-Do Activities for First Time Visitors
Historic charm, outdoor adventure, local culture, and unforgettable experiences just north of Dallas — the guide to the things you simply can't miss.
Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or exploring North Texas for the first time, McKinney blends historic charm, outdoor adventure, and local culture just north of Dallas. This guide highlights the experiences first-time visitors simply can't miss.
Start in Historic Downtown
No first visit is complete without the square: beautifully preserved architecture and more than 120 locally owned businesses — boutiques, art galleries, coffee shops, wineries, and restaurants. Browse the antique stores, grab a handcrafted coffee, lunch on a patio, and keep an eye out for the famous Tiny Doors, the whimsical public art scavenger hunt. The free Downtown Trolley loops the district for easy access to it all.
Get outside
The Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary is a 289-acre preserve with roughly five miles of hiking trails, interactive exhibits, native gardens, and wetlands — seasonal events like Dinosaurs Live and the Butterfly Gardens make repeat visits worthwhile. Beyond it, the city maintains nearly 3,000 acres of parks, and more than 80 miles of connected trails: Bonnie Wenk for the playgrounds and dog park, Towne Lake for kayaking and waterfront walks, Erwin Park for hiking and mountain biking.
Step back in time
Nearby, the Collin County History Museum — in the beautifully preserved 1911 McKinney Post Office — showcases the people and events that shaped the county. The self-guided Historic District Walking Tour on the McKinney TX app adds audio to the architecture.
Arts, laughs, and a Croatian village
Catch an evening of laughs at The Comedy Arena (many shows are family-friendly), visit the Heard-Craig Center for the Arts & Museum in its preserved historic home, and take the self-guided mural tour through downtown. Then head to Adriatica Village — inspired by a Croatian seaside town, with waterfront strolls, stone architecture, and some of the most photographed corners in the city.
Taste your way through
Downtown offers chef-driven restaurants, Texas barbecue, artisan bakeries, craft cocktails, wine bars, and locally roasted coffee — wandering in without a strict itinerary often leads to the most memorable meals. For something guided, Food Walks of Texas samples local favorites while covering the city's history.
Depending on the timing, a signature event may land during the visit — Oktoberfest, Arts in Bloom, Home for the Holidays, Red, White and BOOM! and more fill the calendar. Few destinations combine walkable historic streets, award-winning local businesses, expansive parks, and rich Texas history in one place — if it's your first visit, don't be surprised when it isn't your last.
