The name on the trophy

Byron Nelson Set Records Nobody's Touched Since 1945

Eleven consecutive wins in a single season. Eighteen in the year. Byron then retired to a Texas ranch at thirty-four, and in 1968 this tournament became the first on the PGA Tour named for a professional golfer, a distinction it still carries to this day.

The tournament he lent his name to has become one of the most charitable events in golf with proceeds benefiting the Momentous Institute's work with children and families, more than $195 million to date per the tournament and the Salesmanship Club of Dallas.

What visitors ask before Byron week

Check the downtown square first — the inns and the Grand Hotel are fifteen minutes from the gates and a better evening. After that, demand spills into Frisco, Allen, and Plano; inventory north and east of town often never shows up in rate shops, so it's worth asking Visit McKinney directly.

The moment dates are firm. Byron week compresses hotels across the county, and groups that must land this week start planning up to eighteen months out.

Off-site parking with shuttles, or rideshare to the designated zone — both are mapped on the tournament's official site, and the layout can change year to year. Staying at Craig Ranch puts the gates about five minutes away.

The historic square is the answer: shopping and patios on a walkable 1875 grid, Chestnut Square's heritage village, the Tiny Doors scavenger hunt, and the Heard wildlife sanctuary for kids — all free or close to it, and all reachable without touching tournament traffic.

Pleasantly. Every night eats like a Saturday, so reserve dinner when the room is booked. The free trolley loops the district, which makes it a no-parking evening.
