Meet the Downtown Trolley
Inspired by McKinney’s historic Interurban Railway, the Downtown Trolley offers a free, convenient way to travel through the heart of downtown. Hop on at a designated stop — or simply flag down the driver when you see the trolley pass by.

Interurban History & Today’s Trolley
On September 1, 1906, McKinney became part of the Interurban Railway System — an electric rail line connecting Dallas to Denison and running directly through downtown. At its peak, the system operated 22 passenger cars daily and played a key role in the region’s growth and commerce.
After more than 40 years of service, the interurban made its final run on December 31, 1948.
Today, the Downtown Trolley honors that legacy by reintroducing a free, accessible, and charming public ride experience — carrying a piece of McKinney’s past into its future.
Trolley Rentals
Looking for a fun and unique way to transport your group or celebrate a special occasion? The Downtown Trolley is available for private rentals within McKinney city limits.
Service Area: Rentals are available within McKinney city limits only.
Availability: Sundays 3–11 p.m.; Mondays–Wednesdays 8 a.m.–11 p.m. (subject to driver schedules and downtown events).
Capacity & Driver: Seats up to 14 passengers. A professional driver is included and required for all rentals.
Pricing & Booking
- Base Rate (2 hours): $300
- Additional Hours: $125 per hour
- Maintenance Fee: $75 (applies to all rentals)
- Holiday rates may apply

Cancellations must be made at least 10 days in advance for a full refund.

What are the trolley hours of operation?
The Downtown Trolley currently operates Thursdays - Saturdays, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Hours may vary due to special events, holidays, or weather conditions.
Does it cost anything to ride the trolley?
No. The Downtown Trolley is free to ride for all passengers.
Where does the trolley go?
The trolley travels along intersecting routes through Historic Downtown McKinney, connecting public parking areas with shops, restaurants, attractions, and event locations.
Where can I board the trolley?
Passengers may board the trolley at designated trolley stops along the route or by flagging down the driver when it is safe to do so.
Is the trolley ADA accessible?
Yes. The Downtown Trolley is ADA accessible and can accommodate guests with mobility needs.
Can I bring pets, strollers, or bikes on the trolley?
Well-behaved pets are welcome. Strollers may be accommodated as space allows. Bicycles are not permitted onboard.
Can I rent the trolley for a private event?
Yes. The Downtown Trolley is available for private rentals within McKinney city limits, subject to availability and scheduling.
