From there, walk over to the historic downtown square. More than 170 shops and boutiques line the streets, so give yourself real time to browse. Grab a coffee at Collective Coffee Downtown, then pop into local favorites like the Antique Company Mall for a fun souvenir find or Neighbor Books for your next page turner. Be sure to take a ride on the free Downtown McKinney Trolley, a favorite for kids and adults alike!
For lunch, try Harvest at the Masonic, a farm-to-table restaurant right on the square known for sourcing from local producers. If you're craving something more casual, Local Yocal covers Texas-style steaks and burgers, and Cadillac Pizza Pub serves wood-fired pizza. Head to the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary, a 289-acre preserve just outside downtown with more than five miles of hiking trails, a native plant garden, and a seasonal butterfly house. Inside the museum, you'll find fossils, live animal exhibits, and a pioneer village that gives a look at what life was like in this part of Texas generations ago. Plan on spending at least half a day here, especially if you want to walk more than one trail.
After a morning of hiking, refuel with an early dinner. TUPPS Brewery is a solid pick for a laid-back atmosphere, often with food trucks and live music. If you're in the mood for Texas barbecue, Hutchins BBQ is a longtime local favorite for brisket, ribs, and classic sides.
Monday: Labor Day Wind-Down
There's no need to rush out of town. Take your time over breakfast, enjoy one last walk through McKinney's charming streets, and soak up the slower pace before heading home. Enjoy a crisp mimosa on the patio at Layered then head to Bresnan's for some to-go pastries for the road. On your way out of town, drive through Adriatica Village, a Croatian-inspired corner of the city with breathtaking views.
