When you think of McKinney, Texas, you probably picture charming historic streets, tree-lines corners, a thriving downtown square, and local pride. But tucked amid that heritage is a quirky superlative you might not expect. McKinney holds the world record for the most vintage ice cream freezers, preserved for all to see at Chestnut Square Heritage Village.
A Scoop of History
The heart of this story is Dixie’s Store (also called the Brimer Anderson Grocery), one of the historic buildings in Chestnut Square built in 1918. It was originally located at Grave
s and Howell Street and in the early 1900s, farmers dropped off a list of their supplies to the store clerk before going into town to shop or tend to business. Once the errands were finished, the farmers returned to the store to pick up their supplies and pay the bill.
The store was also a gathering place where locals could catch up on news and gossip, play games, or just gather on their front porch to enjoy each other’s company. Years later, Mr. Bremer’s daughter, Dixie Bremer Anderson ran the store where it then became known as Dixie’s Store.
World Record Holding Store
Today, Dixie’s Store resides Doc & Clyde’s Ice Cream Freezer Museum, home to what is claimed to be the world’s largest collection of ice cream freezers, and it is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.
The collection is said to include around 300 vintage “ice cream cranks”—hand-cranked freezers that tell the sto
ry of homemade ice cream through the decades. Some date back to the late 1800s, showcasing the ingenuity of early ice cream makers. The cranks range from classic barrel styles to more whimsical and exotic designs, many featuring playful themes and unique craftsmanship that make each piece a conversation starter. From wooden paddles and tin canisters to painted handles and quirky shapes, the variety reflects both the evolution of ice cream making and the creativity of the people who loved it.
