Recreation District
McKinney’s Recreation District is a hub for sports, fitness, and family-friendly activities. Anchored by Gabe Nesbitt Community Park on the west side of the district and the Al Ruschhaupt Soccer Complex on the district's east side, this district features a wide selection of baseball and softball fields, soccer and cricket fields, tennis/pickleball courts, a skate park, PSA McKinney, a dog park, playgrounds, walking/cycling trails, and Apex Centre, a state-of-the-art fitness and aquatics facility. The district is also home to the John & Judy Gay Library, offering a vast collection of books, programs, and community resources. With top-tier recreational amenities and green spaces and a top-rated public library, this area is a go-to destination for active lifestyles and lifelong learning.
The following are amenities offered in the Recreation District, broken down by the three main city parks and the high school football stadium, all located within the district:
Gabe Nesbitt Community Park is a vast recreation area featuring youth athletic field (baseball, softball, and soccer), a skate park, (indoor youth sports facility), and more, listed below:
Bonnie Wenk Park is a 216-acre central McKinney park featuring five play structures (including an all-abilities playground), top-rated dog park, a first-come-first-served pavilion, amphitheater structure where concerts and fitness events take place throughout the year, lighted multi-purpose fields (used for football, soccer, or lacrosse practice) and in the center of the park, a five-acre fishing pond. Bonnie Wenk Park is connected to multiple other city parks through a series of hike/bike trails that run through the park.

Al Ruschhaupt Park features two sections, one featuring soccer fields and the other including a playground with splash pad, and soccer fields also used for cricket and lacrosse. Connecting these two sections is a portion of McKinney's trail system that runs from north of Bonnie Wenk Park through Al Ruschhaupt Park and down into Towne Lake Park and Old Settlers Recreation Center on the east side of the city. Also found here is a nine-hole memorial Alex Clark Disc Golf Course.
The McKinney ISD Stadium is on the southeastern most end of the Recreation District. The 12,000-seat stadium has hosted NCAA Div. 2 Football Championship Games annually since 2018 as well as the annual Drum Corps International summer tour since 2022. State UIL competitions are also held in this state-of-the-art sports complex.
The attached Community Center is used for school district and city-hosted banquets and other events.
